From giant safety-pin ticket holders and black-and-white TVs in the back of a Chevy pickup to watching my 75-year-old dad still race the U.S. Nationals, racing has been part of our family for generations. A lot has changed since the ’80s—but somehow, the moment you pull through those gates, racing has a way of making you young again.

You may come to the racetrack for the racing, but somewhere along the way, the people become just as important. From competitors and pit neighbors to lifelong friends who become family, some of the best things we take home from the racetrack aren't trophies at all.

A Jr. Dragster race is about so much more than reaction times, dial-ins, and win lights. From the stands, some of the best moments happen before the tree ever drops—the fist bumps, helmet taps, thumbs-ups, hand signals, and little routines shared between young drivers and the people starting them.
